The Kristiansand area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In 1996 the well preserved skeleton of a woman was found in this area dating back to around 6500 BCE. King Christian IV of Norway, visited the location in 1635 and in July 1641 formally founded the town of Christianssand. It was occupied by German forces during the second world war. Before the opening of the Kiel Canal, Kristiansand occupied a strategic and fortified position at an opening between the Baltic and the North Sea. Today Kristiansand is the fifth largest city in Norway with a population of around 85,000. As a large shipping town, it is a profitable location for ship builders. Beer, soft drink and ice-cream production has a long history in the city. A nickel factory is also a large employer.
