OSLOFJORD |
Oslofjord is not a fjord in a strict geological sense and is more correctly a bay. It is 17 kms long and 1 km wide. Oslo is situated at its northern tip. A population of more than 2 million is scattered around its shores and has Norway's busiest traffic of ferries and cargo boats. There are also hundreds of populated islands within Oslofjord.
The oldest settlements in and around the Oslofjord date from the Stone Age and the Bronze Age.Three of the best preserved Viking ships were found in this area. It provided a strategic position for German toops which were stationed along its shores in WWII.
