The Sognefjord
The Sognefjord is the longest and most well known Fjord in Norway and the third longest in the World stretching inland for some 205 kms. Because the other two fjords are ice-covered, the Sognefjord is the longest open fjord in the World. The fjord reaches a maximum depth of 1300 metres and the average width is about 4.5kms.Cliffs surrounding the fjord climb to more than 1000 metres. The fjords were formed by giant glacier tongues of ice up to 3 kms thick that, after carving out deep U-shaped valleys, retreated over several ice ages and sea water filled the landscape, 'Fjord' is one of a few Norwegian words that have become internationally used.
